Camp Larga

Exploradores visit Camp Playa Larga for this week's Lord of the Flies field experience. It was pretty rough seas and Ceasar and Jean Francos little brother braved the outer reef. Kids saw a once pristine reef covered with Dictyopteris, except where diadema were grazing. The diadema were eating this only where they had habitat to secure themselves. They learned this algal overgrowth to be an indication of over fishing. Gamelier and the kids tormented a solitary moon jelly who it appeared was then praying for a turtle to eat him. They learned that the distinguishable characteristics of the animal (outside the stinging cells), were the reproductive organs that wind in a clover shape in the center. On the other end of the beach explorers, found brittle stars and red urchins in the shallows. A sting ray was hanging out with us and the land barracuda (Doyle) was fed many hot dogs. Macuto is still waiting for a wetsuit that fits him...the ones we ordered had to be returned as small adults fit only the big kids and the large kids are too small for the small kids. Winter weather is an issue for the kids as when the water cools, the kids turn blue quite rapidly.
